A new study by Pune-based ValueNotes in collaboration with Mumbai-based KnowGenix, titled \"Bioinformatics Outsourcing for Life Sciences - India Opportunity" shows that global clients are increasingly looking at India to cater to their bioinformatics needs.
The report provides an in-depth analysis of the Indian bioinformatics vendor landscape. ValueNotes uses a robust methodology to rate vendors on the basis of weighted averages of various quantitative and qualitative factors, including reputation, size, service focus, financial strength, partnerships, recognition and certifications. The study has revealed Ocimum Biosolutions and TCS as the top vendors of bioinformatics services.
Ocimum Biosolutions provides end-to-end genomics, and has built a strong service portfolio through the acquisition of German-MWG's DNA microarrays and Isogen Life Sciences' biomolecules synthesis business. Though, it was set-up as a pure bioinformatics company, it has expanded into the bioresearch business to emerge as an integrated player in life sciences. Adds Dr. Ashwin Sivakumar, Head Marketing, Ocimum Biosolutions, \"the future will see integrated life sciences players pulling major chunk of bioinformatics services business. Hence, Ocimum Biosolutions is already working towards this business model".
TCS, part of the TATA group that has interests in telecom, steel and retail, is amongst the largest IT companies in India. Owing to its large size, it is able to offer scalability to its bio-informatics clients. It has entered into deals with international players like Congenia (Italy) and Sequenom (US), with the deal with Congenia being one of the first such research deals by an IT company. TCS has a strong R&D thrust and undertakes innovative R&D at its Advanced Technology Centre.
The ValueNotes / KnowGenix report forecasts that the Indian bioinformatics services outsourcing opportunity is expected to grow at a CAGR of 25% rising from USD 32 million in 2007 to USD 62 million by 2010. According to Arun Jethmalani, CEO ValueNotes, "The wide variety of opportunities and their diverse nature will attract many new bioinformatics vendors, as well as encourage existing players to broaden and deepen service offerings. Though the opportunities are clear, tapping these opportunities will require various "success factors". We expect that there could be disproportionate gains by a few strong vendors, including those from our "winner" list."
